When the Wind Dies…

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Adonya

Yesterday, while futzing about my apartment doing some mundane task, I found myself singing Bette Midler’s Wind Beneath My Wings because it was playing in my head.  When suddenly, it donned on me WHY I was hearing that song.

My energy had been low since Thanksgiving as it was my mother’s favorite holiday next to Christmas. She really did both holidays REALLY well, and I was missing her terribly.  [As a vegan, I no longer celebrate the holiday as most of the foods my son will not eat due to his aversion to certain food textures. Plus, it’s just the two of us.]

Anyhoo, as I realized it was my mother who had come for a visit, I was both happy and sad, for in that moment, she was letting me know that I was not alone.  [We played this song at her memorial, so this was her way of letting me know she was there.]

It has been nearly 25 years since she passed, and most days, I do pretty well.

Most days.

This time of the year can be tough for people who have lost loved ones and who do not have a close relationship with those still among the living.  Such is the case for me.

Although my mother is deeply missed, I know she is not truly gone.  She’s still “there”; more so during my emotional times of need.

I am thankful for her little visit. It helped me get back into the swing of things and move on with my day in a lighter way.

And I am grateful and thankful for the wind she blew beneath my wings to help me soar once again.

Lyrics

Ohhhh, oh, oh, oh, ohhh.
It must have been cold there in my shadow,
To never have sunlight on your face.
You were content to let me shine, that’s your way.
You always walked a step behind.

So I was the one with all the glory,
While you were the one with all the strength.
A beautiful face without a name for so long.
A beautiful smile to hide the pain.

Did you ever know that you’re my hero,
And everything I would like to be?
I can fly higher than an eagle,
For you are the wind beneath my wings.

It might have appeared to go unnoticed,
But I’ve got it all here in my heart.
I want you to know I know the truth, of course I know it.
I would be nothing without you.

Did you ever know that you’re my hero?
You’re everything I wish I could be.
I could fly higher than an eagle,
For you are the wind beneath my wings.

Did I ever tell you you’re my hero?
You’re everything, everything I wish I could be.
Oh, and I, I could fly higher than an eagle,
For you are the wind beneath my wings,
’cause you are the wind beneath my wings.

Oh, the wind beneath my wings.
You, you, you, you are the wind beneath my wings.
Fly, fly, fly away. You let me fly so high.
Oh, you, you, you, the wind beneath my wings.
Oh, you, you, you, the wind beneath my wings.

Fly, fly, fly high against the sky,
So high I almost touch the sky.
Thank you, thank you,
Thank God for you, the wind beneath my wings.
